Holocaust Survivor Visits Y Group

The Y Group studied the Holocaust. In addition to reading, Elie Wiesel’s novel, Night, students became “witnesses” to this tragedy by watching films, reading short stories and poetry, and visiting the Holocaust museum.

They also viewed “Survivors Among Us,” a documentary produced by Y Group parent Deborah Weiner. On February 15th, Ms. Weiner, along with Leo Bretholz, a survivor featured in her film, came to talk to Y Group about his experience and by doing so, created more witnesses. Mr. Bretholz was one of only a handful of documented “jumpers;” he and a fellow prison escaped by prying open the barred windows and jumping from the moving cattle car that was transporting him to a death camp.
